St. Mary's U. P. S is situated in the western mountain village of Moongodu, Channapetta in the panchayath of Alayamon, in the district of Kollam. St. Mary's U. P. S takes a very crucial role in the social, cultural and the educational spheres of this region.
It was in 1917 that the Christian missionaries established a church (St. John's Latin Catholic Church) and adjacently a school as well. Today the school is in the festive spirit of centenary.
At first this school started functioning as an L. P school. Later a nearby Government L. P school at Elavoor, was adjoined to it. Thus it was upgraded as a U. P school and commenced its functioning.
Initially it belonged to the diocese of Quilon. Then while the diocese of Punalur was formed and erected, the school also became a part of it. It was the one and only excellent school at the Channapetta zone. But the growth of the school was stunted by the sudden rise of English medium schools in the nearby places.
This school is blessed with a two storied building and other adjacent buildings. Now, from the Ist standard upto 7th, there are 8 divisions and 159 students. There are 31 students in the pre-primary section and 10 teachers and a non-teaching staff make the school function properly. As the school is about to celebrate its centenary, it is high time that the teachers, PTA and the Managemnt take special and sincere measures to improve the school to a desirable standard.
