Sri Vijayeswari High School holds a rich tradition of decades in bestowing knowledge; besprinkled with golden alphabets to numerous generations. It is situated in the village of Cheriyanadu, Chengannur Taluk at the district of Alappuzha. Sri Vijayeswari is not at all a mere school but it is the one of its own kind that excels and shines even today as a great and foremost school of Chriyanadu; brimming with marked wisdom, tradition and loyalty.
There was a time in which Cheriyanadu had no scope for the pursuit of further studies after the primary education. The broad love for cultivation, the goodness of the village and their perspiration had yielded prosperity into their soil at those days. On 18 th May, 1937, Mr. A. O Varghese, a man of dazzling benevolence established a school named "Sachivothama Vilasam" and lit the light of knowledge for the future generations in Cheriyanadu. The teachers, students and the native people who had toiled hard to build the infrastructure and the wall; keep those sweet memories of initial days at their heart with little more pride and enthusiasm. It is this democratic spirit that retains the facial glory of this school.
The very first Head Master of this school was Mr. N. M Umman and then the teacher was Mr.M. C. Unnunni and the peon was Mr. M. K Varghese, were the foremost members of this institution. The mission commenced by them is taken up by the succeeding generations and carried out with much vigour and power.
Sachivothama Vilasam School, which spread the light of letters, was taken under the supervision of an educationist cum ascetic, His Excellency late Rev.Dr. Jerome. M. Fernandez, the then Bishop of Quilon. This was in consequent of the tireless efforts made by Rev. Fr. M. M Varghese, the parish priest of Lourdes Matha Roman Catholic Church. Later the school was renamed as Sri Vijayeswari. In 1957 it gained its status as an aided school as per the Educational Bill of Kerala. In 1975 it was upgraded as a High School. In 1986, when the Quilon diocese was partitioned and the diocese of Punalur was formed, the ownership of the school was handed over to the diocese of Punalur. Under the patronage of the founder Bishop late Rev. Dr. Matias Kappil the school earned its fame as the top most school in the district of kollam. Initially, girls were only admitted in the high school classes and later boys were also incorporated into the school from the year 1999. The school started reaching greater heights as the English Medium was incepted. The school stands in glory and prestige by virtue of the untiring efforts made by the great souls like Fr Ildaphonse, (the Lourdes Matha Vicar) and the administrative skills of the veteran head masters like Mr. M.N Ummen, V. B koshi,M. C Unnunni, K. V Thomas, Rev. Fr A. N Varghese etc. The school remains as the right inheritor of an exquisite tradition through the path lit up by the erudite teachers. With the splendour of the present day achievements as well as the various action plans aiming at the future, Sri Vijayeswari sparkles with eminence and pride.
The curiosity or willingness to know is the basic requisite for a student here. Neither their financial status nor caste mattered here. The world of Vijayeswari was universal and true. The religion of the school was that "There should not be any bias in the unfettered world of letters." The tradition of this school is to preserve the popular educational system meticulously. Here education is the birth right of each and every students. In 2003, a jubilee building (library) was built with the help of general public during the headmastership of Mr. Francis Lucing. The management began to think various possibilities to uplift the school as the infrastructural facilities seemed to be inadequate. Thus His Excellency Dr. Joseph Kariyil laid foundation stone for the school building. In 2010,
January 13 th , on the day of school Anniversary; being immersed in the festive spirit and joy, His Lordship Rt. Rev Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan, the bishop of Punalur, blessed the school building and offered it for the public. Mr. Joseph Wadekar is a man of benevolence who had helped to materialise this dream and he is specially remembered here with utmost gratitude. This venture was in fact supervised by then the manager Rev. Dr. Johnson Joseph and the headmistress Mrs. Mary kutty. Teachers, students, PTA and the native people had taken part in this great venture by all means. Sri Vijayeswari School functions under the helm of Mrs. Sheela Paul with the collaboration of 25 teachers and 4 non-teaching staffs to nurture 539 students. The school has grown like a peepal tree by running its roots into the deep soil of Cheriyanadu; holding its head straight up the sky; spreading its branches and shade by the edges. For years, the students of this school reap hundred folds of result.
Many activities are incorporated in the school for the all round development of the pupils. Students have exhibited their genius in the extracurricular activities and upheld the pride of this school. It has also moulded famous personalities in the bygone decades. Sri Vijayeswari adopts a sort of teaching technique that inspires the transfer of knowledge in an interesting and creative atmosphere.
