ST.JOHN'S L P S , PUNALUR

Certain historical truths outlive the passage of time and remain indelible even after the deliberate attempts to erase them. The history never allows aberration from its trajectory; the chariot of time moves forth. St. John L. P. S, the renowned hub of knowledge, can also never hide its history. While pondering over the trodden paths, the truths of tolerance and ordeals can be traced.

St. John's L. P. S stands on a hill top by the Punalur railway station on the bank of Kallada River, flowing beneath the historical suspension bridge at Punalur. It has been 91 years since the school was established.

It was in 1925 that this school was founded. At that time, travancore, kochi and Malabar had not been merged into the state of Kerala so travancore had four divisions in which the Punalur region belonged to the Kollam division at the east mountain part. While C. P Ramaswami Iyer was the Diwan of Travancore, the foreign missionaries had come for their mission activities in the various parts of India and founded numerous churches. The missionaries who had centred their mission activities at Kollam before 110 years, reached Punalur and established a thatched Church named " Sathwadhi Matha".

The missionaries were persons with foresight guiding principles. Rev. Fr John Mary, a foreign missionary, who had come from Belgium, took up the charge of the church. He was so convinced that a school was a prerequisite for this place as it was steeped in ignorance and illiteracy. The custom that prevailed in those times was to establish schools adjacent to the church. Since it was founded along with a church ( palli), it was called as " pallikoodam". The Catholic Church pays a special homage to the saints so they name their institutions after some prominent saints. So Fr. John Mary named the school as St. John's as a token of special reverence to St. John the Baptist who had baptised Jesus Christ.

It was Rt. Rev. Dr. Benziger who was the bishop of Quilon at that time. Initially, there were only four classes in the school. Mr. T. Ri Saviour Kochayathu was the Head Master and Mr. Thankappan, Mr. Kunjachan and Mrs Rosily were the other teachers. The school functioned under the complete supervision of Missionaries as well as St. Mar's Church. During the rule of Sir C. P Rama swami Iyer, the schools belonging to the state of Travancore began to be nationalised and several managements gave consent to the new policy. But the management of missionaries were not ready to give their school. Consequently it was retained as a Denomination School and soon all the governmental aids were denied. The teachers, who had devotion and tolerance, displayed their benevolence by being ready to transmit knowledge and take part in the school-activities with the meagre salary provided by the management. Thus the school rose to progress without the aid of government.

The Franciscan sisters of the immaculate heart of Mary of Quilon founded a convent at Punalur. Since Christ King Convent came into being nearby the Church and School, the sisters took the charge of the school. The sisters were the headmistress of the school from 1938 to 1988. In 1947, on August 15th India was emancipated from the foreign domination and it gave way for democracy. The government began to allow grants with the advent of democracy. The meagre amount was not even sufficient for the maintenance of the school. The management had to find the necessary fund for the smooth functioning of the school. Each stage the school faced several setbacks; overcame its adversities and kept on progressing. Several children fled to this school from nearby localities. In addition to it, the educational sphere underwent tremendous changes. Thus the supervision of the school was completely handed over to the indigenous management from the foreign missionaries.

The students of this school actively take part in various competitions and secure first prizes. Thus the parents are more loyal to the management and school. Without fail, the school ensures incessantly the excellent standard of education, discipline and security as per the wish of parents. As the students achieve scholarships in their academics, they come up with flying colours in the matter of arts and sports as well. The teachers exhibit utmost sincerity in realising the talent and potentiality of each students and encouraging them to showcase their skills. When the Kerala state was formed, St. John's L. P. S, which belonged to the district of kollam in the educational sub district of punalur, retained its position as the most excellent school of Punalur educational sub district. We are so proud to state that Rt. Rev. Dr. Stanley Roman, the bishop of Quilon was an alumnus of our school. St. John's L.P.S is an Alma Mater for several Engineers, Doctors, Priests, Nuns and Politicians. Several great personalities who had their primary education in this school adorn a very prominent role in high rung of our society.

With the bifurcation of the Quilon diocese this school belonged to the diocese of Punalur in 1986. Late Rev. Dr. Matias Kapil was the foremost bishop as well as the manager of the school. In 2005 Rev. Dr Joseph Kariyil assumed charge as the second bishop of Punalur and His excellency exerted a special emphasis on education. The Bishop formed an educational board for improving the standard as well as the education of all the schools under the diocese. Rt. Rev. Dr. Johnson Joseph was appointed as the manager. Rev. Dr. Christy Joseph is the present Manager of the corporate Management . As per the renewed educational policies, the teachers receive excellent training from BRC. The learning-standard of each student is assessed through CCE and informed to their parents. The class PTA functions more vigorously like the school PTA. The class PTA facilitates opportunity for the parents to meet the teachers of their children directly. In addition to the studies there functions various clubs like Science Club, Literary Club and Health club which ensure personality development, skills and gathering of students. English Medium classes approved by the government of kerala also function in this school.

The brilliant students who display their acumen in the learning subjects obtain scholarships by participating in various competitive examinations. Our students gain several prizes, cash awards and certificates by exhibiting high standards in the competitions that are held in the sub district level for Science-Maths- work experience fairs and in youth festivals. The retired teachers have facilitated various scholarships for improving the standard of learning. Every year, these scholarships have been distributed. The brilliant students, hailing from humble upbringing are encouraged with endowments and prizes. With the recognition as an outstanding school of the district, we arealso so proud like all of you. We commemorate with gratitude all the former teachers who had toiled hard to earn this special privilege.

The Lord Almighty may bless this school to reach greater heights in accordance with the changes of the time by following the footsteps of our predecessors.
